Preventing radon from penetrating a building through the soil or foundation is the aim of a sub-slab depressurization system, similar to other radon mitigation systems. It is made up of a fan or blower that extracts air from the ground beneath a structure and releases it into the sky via a network of pipes for collection and release. To put extraction pipes in contact with the subgrade materials directly beneath the building’s slab, the technique usually entails drilling one or more holes through the slab. In certain instances, horizontal extraction through foundation walls may also be one of these extraction places.

In comparison to the ambient pressure inside the building, these systems produce a negative pressure field directly beneath and outside the foundation of a building. The extraction point in the slab creates a pressure field that rises up next to the foundation walls. This makes it possible for the system to extract soil gas from under the slab and safely release it outside the structure.
